There is a small country in Europe whose shape resembles a handsome bunch of grapes. Moreover, it just so happens that there are plenty of real grapes in this country - they are the most important natural resource from which the greatest national treasure is made - wine! I am talking about Moldova, of course.

5,000 years of tradition

The oldest fossilized grape leaf imprint in Moldova dates back to the 2nd century BC. It was in those ancient times that the Greeks began to appear in the Moldavian lands, and with them - the knowledge of the production of a drink from a vine. The Roman times brought about the further development of the wine industry, which was immensely etched into the culture of the Moldavian land. In the 19th century, the most famous ruler of Moldova - Stephen the Great - used to enjoy a solid dose of wine before battle. And although in 1812 the Moldavian lands fell under the rule of the Russian Tsar, it did not hurt the wine industry.

On the contrary - it was then that investments in the development of vineyards began, and the first exports of Moldovan wines began. It was similar after World War II, when Moldova became one of the republics of the USSR. And although it was one of the smallest republics of the Soviet Union, it quickly gained the status of the largest producer and internal supplier of wines in the entire "Soyuz".

Suitable natural conditions

Moldova's mild climate and soil conditions (80% fertile black earths) are factors that are perfect for growing grapevines. The country lies on the same latitude as Burgundy, with short and warm winters, hot summers and warm autumns.

Most vineyards are located in the south of the country and in the vicinity of Chisinau - the capital of Moldova. The country can be divided into 4 wine regions: Codru (central area around Chisinau), Stefan Voda (southwest), Valul Lui Traian (south) and Balti (northwest).

Appreciated all over the world

In the central part of the country, white grapes are grown most often, which are used to make light wines. Here, too, there are the most distinguished Moldavian wine brands, such as Cricova, Milesti Mici and Branesti. Famous people from all over the world buy and store their wines - incl. Queen Elizabeth II, Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin or Donald Tusk. In the Center and in the south of Moldova, the earliest wines are produced: Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Rara Negra.

Moldovan wines are now appreciated all over the world. As much as 85% of the production is intended for export, which generates 2.5% of GDP. Poland itself imports over 8 million bottles of wine from Moldova annually.

Moldova and wine - some unusual curiosities

Moldova is a little known, underestimated, but also interesting country that has a lot to offer (contrary to appearances - not only wine). It is worth getting acquainted with a few intriguing facts:

  • Wine in Moldova is not alcohol - the Moldovan government introduced an amendment which recognizes as alcohol only products in which its volume is at least 15%. Wines usually have less - this makes them food products and their distribution is much simpler,
  • The largest underground vineyard in the world (over 100 km long) is located in Moldova,
  • Over 15% of the country's inhabitants are professionally engaged in wine production,
  • Annual production reaches about 1.6 million hectoliters, and exports - 67 million bottles,
  • Every wine in Moldova is perfect. Both bought in a luxury store and purchased in a plastic bottle from "babushka" at the market,
  • Moldavian wines are excellent in taste, delight with quality and extremely cheap. Even in Polish shops you can buy an excellent Moldavian drink for less than PLN 20.
