What is the most famous Italian saying? Probably "La Dolce Vita!" Or "Sweet Life!". Temperamental Italians are famous for their love of life and the use of its charms.
And to make it even more beautiful, they like to sweeten it too! Well, because if life is supposed to be sweet, it must not be lacking in sweetness?
Dolci on a pedestal
Italians love "dolci" or sweet. After all, what better to overcome the bitterness of a strong and aromatic espresso than with a portion of your favorite sweets? It can be said that many Italians start their day with sweet and coffee - a quick breakfast is usually a strong coffee, a croissant with chocolate, a muffin or other type of goodies.
Italians have mastered the art of confectionery and baking to perfection - just like the art of brewing coffee and making wine. No wonder then that sweets straight from sunny Italy quickly gained recognition all over the world. Do you know which of the popular sweets are Italian?
Tiramisu
The name of this dessert is mysterious to many. It comes from the Italian words "Tira mi su!" meaning literally "pick me up". Tiramisu is a light dessert made of mascarpone cheese, egg mass and sponge cakes soaked in strong espresso - it is the addition of coffee and caffeine that is supposed to be a source of energy in the dough and give us an additional "kick" to act. Tiramisu was established in north-eastern Italy in the 1970s.
Panna Cotta
It is also the legacy of northern Italy - mainly from Piedmont and Tuscany! Today it is one of the most recognizable Italian desserts around the world. It is made of heated cream with the addition of gelatin. It is combined with various flavor additives (e.g. vanilla, citrus peel).
Cavalucci
Cavalucci are crispy cookies with almonds, cranberries or other candied fruit. They come from picturesque Tuscany. Their appearance is sometimes more like irregular buns than typical cookies. They are also quite large. Because why spare some sweets?
Biscotti
Biscotti are specific cookies with a spicy aftertaste, baked with the addition of nuts, almonds, honey, cocoa, cinnamon or sugar-coated orange peel. They are often served with strong black coffee (preferably espresso).
Nutella
Who doesn't know Nutella? Many a generation in many countries of the world grew up on it! Not everyone is aware that the favorite cocoa-nougat cream is one of the flagship Italian products! It was created in 1946 by a certain Pietro Ferrero, after whom one of the largest confectionery companies in the world comes from.
What was revolutionary about Nutella? In 1946, right after the war, there was a shortage of chocolate in Italy. I don't think we need to explain how severe it was for the inhabitants of the country? Pietro Ferrero decided to remedy this and as a result of his experiments he created a cream for the production of which only hazelnuts, sugar and a bit of pure cocoa were enough.
Kinder Surprise
Although the popular chocolate eggs with a surprise inside also belong to the Ferrero concert, many do not associate them with Italy. And this is due to the German-sounding name - "Kinder". Nevertheless, these iconic sweets also originated on the Apennine Peninsula! It was created in 1972 in the city of Pavia by William Salice - a longtime associate of Michel Ferrero.
Raffaello
You can risk saying that Raffaello pralines are one of the most popular sweets all over the world! This is another success of the creators of the Ferrero brand. And although these Italian sweets have already conquered the globe and settled permanently in our consciousness, they are one of the youngest confectionery creations - they were created only in 1990!
