Popcorn - the name of this delicacy was supposed to imitate the characteristic sound that arises when beans break under the influence of high temperature. Although we associate popcorn with modern times, cinema halls and fast-food, in fact it has been satisfying people's palates for a very long time.

Popcorn - old beginnings

You need corn to make popcorn. As early as 5,000 years ago, it was cultivated by the Aztecs and it was probably during this period that popcorn itself could have been invented. After all, it is highly likely that ancient Aztec farmers threw corn kernels into the fire. The lucky ones of these Aztecs, the rest of the world population had to wait a little longer to enjoy their popcorn. Other American tribes met him in the Middle Ages, and Europeans had to wait a few more centuries for it. It is said that the first "white man" to know the taste of popcorn was none other than Christopher Columbus!

America's favorite popcorn

It is not known whether Columbus did not like popcorn, or whether the rise in popularity of popcorn in Europe was hindered by other factors, but one thing is certain - it has gained the greatest popularity in North America. And not because of Hollywood! Popcorn appeared at American fairs and country parties long before the invention of cinematography. Later, booths with well-known and popular popcorn appeared in cinemas.

And it was there that the variety of popcorn was created, which everyone who tasted it must love. I am talking about caramel popcorn.

When was caramel popcorn invented?

They say that two heads are better than one and the emergence of flavored popcorn can only confirm this. Experimenting with popcorn flavors was started by two brothers - Frederick and Louis Rueckheim. They were German immigrants who came to Chicago in the second half of the 19th century. In 1870, they opened a popcorn shop and decided to diversify their offer to attract more customers. One of the combinations was a flavored mix of popcorn, nuts and molasses, which quickly became a hit. So much so that in 1896 the brothers registered their brand "Cracker Jack", further experimenting with popcorn flavors. Thus, among the various combinations, caramel-coated popcorn emerged.

This is just fine

The caramel popcorn quickly outperformed other flavored popcorn versions when it comes to its popularity. Why? It's just good! The combination of sweet caramel, popcorn and salt is a unique pleasure for the palate. Besides, many people have nice associations with this taste. Once upon a time, caramel popcorn was only available in cinemas. Admit it, did you, as children, ask your parents to buy your favorite popcorn in the cinema? The association with childhood and cinema is an additional element that makes the taste of caramel popcorn so special!

Today you can quickly prepare it at home

Times are changing, and the things that were once available "on holidays" today we can have every day. One of them is caramel popcorn. Enthusiasts of kitchen experiments can try to prepare it themselves, while supporters of simpler solutions can reach for ready-made popcorn. However, it should be remembered that in the case of the finished product, pay attention to its composition - currently the choice of popcorn on the market is quite large, but unfortunately it is not difficult to find unwanted flavor enhancers, artificial preservatives or other, not very healthy additives. However, it is still possible to find a high-quality product - an example can be, for example, Funny Sheep from SMART SNACK, which uses only high-quality natural caramel. And what's more - we can find further flavor combinations here - Caramel with cinnamon? How about caramel popcorn with peanut butter? Or maybe a caramel in chocolate? Eager to try?
