What's so special about a Coca-Cola glass bottle? It turns out a lot. If it were not for her, there is a high probability that today no one would remember about the drink that was made in 1886.

The characteristic, refreshing taste of Coca-Cola is known in over 200 countries around the world. Its popularity was largely due to the glass bottle - the first ever packaging patented as a trademark.

How did it come about?

The birth of glass beauty

The glass bottle known by every Coca-Cola gourmand was created as a response to the rapidly growing number of counterfeit drinks. There were many businessmen on the American market trying to sell products modeled on phenomenal, carbonated sweetness. The new packaging was to ensure Coca-Cola's recognition and encourage all consumers who despised cheap substitutes to buy it.

The brand of one of the most popular drinks in the world has set itself the goal of creating a bottle with a specific shape that will distinguish Cola from other drinks both in daylight and in complete darkness. This is how an appropriately contoured, glass beauty was created - a modern symbol of the American concern. This bottle was designed in 1915 by the Root Glass Company of Terra Haute.

Its creators were inspired by the shape of cocoa beans. The project was kept strictly secret for another year - until mass production began. In addition to the specific shape, the new Coca-Cola bottle has gained the original color - Georgia Green. On December 25, 1923, the patent was officially announced in the Official Journal.

The brand of the famous carbonated drink approached its solutions with due diligence. It was similar with the design of the glass bottle. Designers were given precise guidelines as to the weight of the Coca-Cola packaging. Empty bottles were to weigh no less than 411 grams, and when filled with a drink, they would weigh 595 grams.

Coca Cola in showrooms, i.e. a historic packaging patent

The glass bottle of Coca-Cola quickly became recognizable - on a par with the brand logo. In 1949, only one percent of Americans did not know its shape, so in 1961 the concern led to a historic event - the patenting of the Cola packaging as a trademark. Modern research shows that 94 percent of people around the world are able to correctly recognize a glass bottle.

Americans appreciate Coca-Cola as a national heritage. The glass bottle itself is a symbol of the United States. This packaging has gained popularity with the appearance of, among others, on the cover of Time magazine or in the work of Andy Warhol. The very sketch of the glass packaging cost its buyer PLN 1 million 134 thousand (USD 288 thousand).
